Letter: My New Year’s resolutionThe other day I was thinking of how much I dislike the media because of its emphasis on the negative of everything. I took a good look at my self and found out that I have been pretty negative about my writings about Coral Gables. I love this city and would only wish it well. It is a wonderful place to live but it could still bear some changes. I do not regret my past negative comments and still believe that they are true and viable.
If you remember the sitcom “All in the Family”, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner) was constantly berating the United States and its president. When confronted by Archie Bunker (his father-in-law) about that he said something to the effect that I love this country as much as you do but it is important to dissent to that which you believe is not right. I started off the New Year by writing a letter to the Coral Gables sanitation department complimenting the men who serve my block. They are very hard working and respectful. I remember a very trite but true little poem that was written into my high school autograph book, more years ago than I wish to remember. It said: “Good, better, best, don’t you ever rest, until the good is better, and the better is the best”. The commissioners have to hear an awful lot of complaints from people like me but that is their job. It is my sincere opinion that they should be paid much better than they are now. It seems that they are receiving part time pay for a difficult and time consuming full time job. If the commissioners were paid in accordance with their counter parts in the business world we would be able to attract more people to the position. I will continue to speak out against things that I believe are inappropriate, wasteful and not beneficial to the citizens of Coral Gables and it’s high image, but I resolve to look toward those things that should be applauded and recognize them accordingly. God bless our beautiful city and God bless America! Nick De Martino Coral Gables, Fla. Comments
