UM raises $1.3 million for United Way

A still weakened economy was not enough to put a damper on the philanthropic spirit of the University of Miami, as faculty, staff, and students reached into their pocketbooks and wallets to help the institution achieve the most successful United Way Campaign in University history.

UM raised $1.3 million for the annual fundraising effort, surpassing its goal by more than $70,000. "Quite an achievement during these difficult economic times," said Bart Chernow, UM's vice provost for technology advancement and vice president for special programs and resource strategy, who chaired the 2009 campaign.

While online giving accounted for a substantial amount of the money raised, creative fundraising activities staged by employees and students also helped push the University past its goal.

Those efforts ranged from a silent auction conducted by Business Services to a spa and wellness fair held by Medical Purchasing. The Office of the President sold pastries, the Division of Continuing and International Education held a jewelry and accessories sale, and several departments sold raffle tickets. Even a little pizza "dough" helped the cause, as the campers in the Mini 'Canes Recreational Sports Camp at the Herbert Wellness Center donated $3,182 from their weekly pizza lunches.
