Mayor Slesnick will not seek another term

Coral Gables Mayor Slesnick announced he will step down when his term is up next year.

Ending months of speculation, Slesnick informed his colleagues at the end of the Jan. 12 city commission meeting that 2010 would be, “…my last full year as mayor of this city.” While he will retire and not seek a fifth term, Slesnick said he intends to remain “vigorous” while in office for the “next 14-15 months”.

Slesnick was first elected in 2001 and then again in 2003 and 2005 (the year voters approved doubling the mayor’s term to four years). In 2007, he won a four-year term. Last year a referendum restored the term of the office of mayor to two years.

Topping the list of likely candidates for mayor is Vice Mayor Bill Kerdyk, Jr.
