Miami City Ballet’s Program II features Twyla Tharp’s “The Golden Section” and George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, Valse Fantaisie (1953) and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue will show at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts (1300 Biscayne Blvd.) on Friday, January 8 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, January 9 at  8p.m.; and Sunday, January 10 at 2 p.m.

Miami City Ballet will start out the New Year with a vibrant second program consisting of four ballets including "Divertimento No. 15," a plotless ballet in five movements.  Danced to Mozart’s Divertimento No. 15 in B Flat, George Balanchine choreographed this ballet to what he called “probably the finest [divertimento] ever written.”  The ballet features five principal women partnered by three men and a corps consisting of eight dancers.  The work features a formal set and ornate costumes.

Second in the program is Valse Fantaisie (1953), a piece choreographed by George Balanchine to Mikhail Glinka’s Valse Fantaisie in B minor. The ballet requires one male dancer to partner with three women, an arrangement Balanchine was fond of using in a number of his choreographies. Set beautifully to Glinka’s score, the dancers must perform with precise attention to musical detail as they phrase and accent their movements to the waltz rhythm of the composition.

Program II will show for the first time on MCB’s main stages Twyla Tharp’s “The Golden Section,” a thrilling segment from her famous work The Catherine Wheel. The piece is set to music by David Byrne (of the Talking Heads) and emanates pure energy as thirteen dancers in gold costumes sail, soar, and tear through the air of the stage’s glowing light.

"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" was originally created as part of Balanchine’s first Broadway collaboration On Your Toes.  Performed to the music of Richard Rodgers, this lively “play within a play” takes place in a gritty New York club and features gangsters, comical cops, a stripper and a hoofer (tap dancer).

A pre-performance talk by Edward Villella or a member of the artistic staff will be conducted free to the ticketed audience 55 minutes prior to each performance in the theater.

Tickets are available at MCB’s Box Office, 2200 Liberty Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139, and range from $19-$169. The Box Office number is (305) 929-7010 or go to www.miamicityballet.org. For phone calls outside of Miami, the toll-free number is (877) 929-7010. Tickets are also available through the Adrienne Arsht Center Box Office (305) 949-6722. “Rush” tickets (1/3 off the price of select seats) are available starting one and a half hours before each performance. Student discounts are available with proper identification on available B, C, and D seats in advance through MCB’s Box Office or at the theater starting one and a half hours before the performance. Tickets are also available at all Ticketmaster outlets.
