Blanche Becerra-Albl Blanche Becerra-Albl, of Coral Gables, has passed away on November 12 at the age of 77 after a courageous struggle against a devastating illness. Blanche was active as a business owner and participated in a variety of local organizations, especially the Country Club of Coral Gables and the Fleet of the Country Club. She was well- known as an avid golfer, bowler and bridge player. She was also known for her generosity to a multitude of charities and was glad to give of her time to the organizations to which she belonged. She was a faithful and devoted wife for 40 years to the late Joseph H. Becerra, a leading Coral Gables businessman who passed away in 1991, and by whom she had two loving sons who survive her: Joseph of Weston, Fla (daughter-in-law Amy) and Robert of Palmetto Bay, Fla, (daughter- in-law Christiana). She was also preceded in death by her second husband, David Albl of Coral Gables, who passed away in 2007. She had five grandchildren: Joseph, Daniel, Lisanne, Matthew and Luke Becerra, who will miss her greatly. She is also survived by two sisters, Rose Castro of Bradenton, Florida and Leonore Barbosa of Port St. Lucie, Florida, as well as by nephews Hugo Lopez of Bradenton, John Barbosa of Tampa, niece Heidi Starr of Port St. Lucie, and her extended family and many friends. Donald Carlin Donald Carlin, passed away after a brief illness on November 11. He was Co-Founder and President of Kahn-Carlin Company Inc., and Founder and Chairmanof LEO Charitable Foundation for Law Enforcement Officers. An ardent supporter of the performing and visual arts, Donald gave generously to the building of the new Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami, to the Florida Grand Opera, The New World Symphony, The Miami City Ballet, The University of Miami and Barry University. In the year 2000, Donald was recognized as Outstanding Philanthropist of the year, by The National Society of Fund Raising. Frank Coffin Gardener Frank Coffin Gardener, 80, business owner, retired lawyer, fourth-generation farmer, passed away peacefully in the company of all his children, October 31 in Miami. After graduation from Yale University in 1951, Mr. Gardner joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving as a Captain in the Korean Conflict. After the war, he attended Harvard Law School graduating in 1956. Foregoing a career with a large corporate firm, Mr. Gardner chose to return to Miami where he became corporate counsel for a Miami-based airline and "hung out his own shingle". Mr. Gardner maintained a private law practiced in Miami for many years. At the same time, Mr. Gardner began a number of successful business ventures. Mr. Gardner served on the Board of Directors of: Continental Citrus Corporation, Continental Mortgage Investors, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, The First National Bank of Palm Beach, The Marine Corps University Foundation, Middlesex School, Plymouth Congregational Church and Ransom Everglades School. Mr. Gardner, a man of courtly demeanor, was an avid reader, accomplished tennis player and expert fisherman. He loved his home on Nantucket Island and spent a great deal of this leisure time there with family and friends. Mr. Gardner is survived by his children Beau Gardner, Courtney Berry, Peter Gardner and his spouse Gina, and his four grandchildren, Gardner Berry, Jared, Christian, and Patrick Gardner. Kenneth Gale Hawkes Kenneth Gale Hawkes, March 15, 1949 to October 31. Florida Bar Board Certified Admiralty and Maritime Lawyer and Maritime Security Expert, Kenneth Gale Hawkes, passed away on October 31. Mr. Hawkes was born in Springfield, Mass. and grew up in Norway, England, and the United States. He graduated from the University of Washington, in Seattle, in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps, Mr. Hawkes served as a Combat Cargo Officer aboard an amphibious ship (LPD), as well as ships security officer, nuclear weapons security officer and chief law enforcement and Legal Officer. When not afloat he served as armored amphibious tractor platoon commander and company executive officer. Following his military career he attended University of Miami and in 1979 obtained a Juris Doctor in Maritime Law. He has practiced Maritime Law for 30 years in the Tampa-St.Petersburg, and Miami Florida areas. Mr. Hawkes held a Second Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and taught hand-to-hand com- bat, personal security, and counter-terrorist tactics to corporate, civilian, and military personnel. Mr. Hawkes was Sr. Vice President of Maritime Security of Wackenhut Corporation in Coral Gables. He was on the founding Board of Directors for the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS), former Chairman of the Maritime Security Committee of the Marine Council of Greater Miami, former chairman of the ASIS Subcommittee on Seaports and Harbors. He is a proctor member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States and long-standing member of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. He was an adjunct professor in the Continuing Education Department at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. After September 11, 2001 he was invited by the International Maritime Organization (United Nations) to write and hold seminar/workshops on Maritime Security world- wide. Working with American Bureau of Shipping he traveled throughout the world training their ROS personnel in maritime security. Mr. Hawkes is the author of the seminal textbook on maritime security, MARITIME SECURITY (Cornell Maritime Press, 1989) as well as numerous papers and magazine articles. She became press secretary in Cuba for the Grau administration. She exiled in the late 50's and had a long career in the airline industry. She was predeceased by her husband of over 25 years George J. Catalina (Ketty) Rojas Isalgue Catalina (Ketty) Rojas Isalgue, 82, passed away in her home on November 1 in Coral Gables. Catalina Rojas Isalgué was born in Vueltas, Las Villas, Cuba, on September 20, 1927 to Maria Luisa Gonzalez and Ignacio Rojas. The beloved wife of 56 years to Dr. Ulises Isalgué, Ketty graduated from the University of Havana, Cuba, as a doctor of medicine; after training in the U.S., she practiced in Warren-Niles, Ohio, for 25 years, until she retired and moved to Miami, last residing in Coral Gables. Ketty is predeceased by her brother Fred Rojas, and is survived by her loving brother Max Rojas, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary Joyce Kriss Mary Joyce Kriss, 69, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 3. She died peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Mary's untimely death is attributed to acute Leukemia resulting from her previous battle with Breast Cancer. Mary Joyce Mahoney was born in Kalamazoo, MI. on October 5, 1940 and she has resided in Miami, Florida since 1963. She is preceded by her loving husband Ted C. Kriss, of 34 years, with whom she resided in Key Largo, Fla. Mary and Ted resided in Key Largo, Florida for a total of nine years along with their beloved Yorkie, Molly before returning to Miami in 2004. Mary Joyce graduated from the St. Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing, MI. in 1962. She was a retired Registered Nurse of 26 years, whose service included 18 years as an ER Nurse for Baptist Hospital in Miami. Mary's nursing career also included employment with South Miami Hospital, as well as Coral Reef Hospital. Mary was the loving mother of daughter Jennifer N. Pierce of Miami and son Ted C. Kriss Jr. (Christine) of Miami. Mary Joyce is survived by her adoring mother Mary Wilson Dudley (92) of Kalamazoo, MI, her loving sister Elizabeth Mattoli (Ruggero) of Rome, Italy and her three loving brothers: Richard Mahoney (Sharon) of Kalamazoo, MI, John Roy Dudley (Brenda) of Madison, WI. and Gordon Dudley (Maureen) of Conifer, CO. Mary lovingly leaves a precious living legacy of four grandchildren: Tristan S. Elliott (12), Pierce C. Elliott (11), Piper J. Marie Elliott (4) and Griffin L. Kriss (1) of Miami, FL. to whom she was known as their beloved Mimi. Her ashes will be spread in the Florida Keys. A memorial service was held to honor Mary on November 11. Clara Rush Oesterle Clara Rush Oesterle, 84, of Young Drive, Inglis, FL, passed away on Sunday, November 1. She was born in Scottsville, KY, on March 22, 1925, daughter of the late Nora Elmore Cathey and Everett Rush. Clara was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Prior to moving to Inglis in 1999, Clara lived in Miami, after having moved there in 1947. Until she retired in 1961, Clara was a registered nurse and office manager for Drs. Sackett, Dix, and Dunn in Coral Gables. In 1974, she was elected as a commissioner of Dade County, and served in that position until 1988. Clara played a major role in getting Dade County's Metro rail and Metromover mass transportation systems planned and constructed. For these efforts, she was recognized by Nancy Reagan in a ceremony at the White House's Rose Garden in Washington, D.C. Clara was also a member of numerous boards of directors, including Jackson Memorial Hospital, Public Health Trust, YMCA, Dade County Citizens Safety Council, South Miami Hospital Foundation, Dade County Youth Fair, American Public Transportation Association, and the State Association of County Commissioners. Clara's husband Ralph ran a very successful income tax and accounting business in Miami. Clara is survived by her daughter Jacki Cooper and her husband Ron of Inglis, FL; and her sons Mike Oesterle of Crystal River, FL and Ed Oesterle and his fiancée Nichol Whitsel of Crystal River, by seven grandchildren: Brandi Medina, Dawn Allen, Brian Oesterle, Karen Caraballo, Tor Storkersen, Chris Storkerson, and Payton Whitsel; eight great- grandchildren: Nicole Caraballo, Destiny Medina, Brandon Caraballo, Trinity Medina, Cooper Allen, Brian Michael Oesterle, Carter Allen, and Madelyn Oesterle; and by several nieces and nephews. Rose Thurer Rose Thurer, of Miami, formerly of Ft. Lauderdale and Hicksville, New York, age 100, passed away on November 6, 2009. Beloved wife of the late Carl Thurer, mother of Richard (Penny), Robert (Shari), loving grandmother of Margaret Anne (Simon Stevens), Katherine Arlen (Susan Stein), Sara Mark, and great-grandmother of Samuel and Hannah Stevens. She was adored by her many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and by all who loved her for her many kindnesses, wit and wisdom. Interment was in New York. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Miami Jewish Home for the Aged at Douglas Gardens. The family received visitors at the Thurer residence on November 10.

Madeline H. Chance Madeline Howe Chance, age 93, passed over into her heavenly life after a brief illness surrounded by her family October 17 at the E.T. York Hospice House. Born August 19, 1916 of "Good New England Stock" in Dorchester, Mass., Madeline married her beloved Dean in 1938. They moved to Florida in 1950 and raised four sons in the idyllic setting of Coconut Grove and Biscayne Bay. In addition to being a loving, dedicated mother, Madeline worked with her husband at Chance Chiropractic Center in New York and Coral Gables for more than 40 years and was a lifelong advocate for the chiropractic profession. She volunteered as a docent for 40 years at Vizcaya Museum, and for numerous years at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She was a devoted volunteer at the University of Miami Touch Research Institute, participating in research on the impact of infant massage on premature babies, and was featured on "Good Morning America" and in "Life Magazine." She represented abused and neglected children in the court system as a volunteer Guardian ad Litem. Madeline continued to enjoy a vibrant life after moving to The Village in Gainesville in 1996, serving a hostess for new residents there, taking continuing education classes and volunteering as a "baby cuddler" at Shands Hospital well into her 80's. She was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove for decades and joined United Church of Gainesville in recent years. Madeline is predeceased by her husband Dean. She leaves an extensive family legacy with four sons Chuck (Ramona) Chance of Gainesville, Steve (Naomi) Chance of Sanibel Island, Michael (Sandra) Chance of Gainesville and Chris (Mary) Chance of Gainesville, 12 loving grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. A celebration of Madeline's life was held on Sunday, November 1 at United Church of Gainesville (1624 NW 5th Avenue) with a reception immediately following in the church Fellowship Hall. In tribute to our wonderful family matriarch who was known as "the lady in red," the family invites everyone to wear something red to the service. Vera Garner Cater Vera Garner Cater, 81, a long time resident of Coral Gables, passed away Oct. 3. Born in Georgetown, SC, she first visited Miami at the invitation of friends. As an American Airline "stewardess", she worked special convention flights to Miami where she became a hostess on the first B&W TV quiz show "Let's Play Pyramid" on Miami's WTVJ. She became the first secretary of the Museum Guild & utilizing her Art degree from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC, she helped create some of the underwater & Everglades exhibits at the Museum of Science. Vera was a Beaux Arts volunteer & Chair of the "Clothesline Sale", now the Beaux Arts Festival. She was also a founder of Camarilla Club. She loved hunting and fishing and was known to pick up her guitar to start a hootenanny around a campfire. Vera was heralded as the "Fairy Princess" who helped save the Alhambra Water Tower from destruction by collecting neighborhood signatures for a petition to place the item before the Coral Gables Commission & presenting the case for its protection. Salvador Manuel Francisco Bachs Cruxent Salvador Manuel Francisco Bachs Cruxent passed away unexpectedly on October 5 at age 75 after a ten month valiant battle with cancer. A native of Barcelona, Spain, he attended schools in France before moving to Havana, Cuba where he graduated from Colegio de LaSalle in Vedado. He was educated at the University of Barcelona and the University of Havana, arriving in Miami from Cuba in 1961 and moving to Spain shortly thereafter. He returned to Miami in 1963, to pass his Architectural Boards and revalidate his Architectural Degree, and was among the first Cuban-educated architects to launch and enjoy a very long and successful 42 year career, always in Coral Gables. He was the first Hispanic to sit on the Coral Gables Board of Architects, an honor which was in the ensuing years twice repeated. He recently attained Architect Emeritus status in the American Institute of Architects. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Edith Anne Sharpe, and their children Ana Carolina (Alejandro) Roig, Christina Maria (George) Griffith and Jordi Cruxent; six adoring grandchildren: Nicholas and Cristian Roig, and Olivia, George, Camilla and Peter-John Griffith; his dear sister Margarita Cruxent Zamora, nieces Margarita Zamora, Judith Green and Maria Victoria (Peter) Crouse, and grand-nieces, Sarah and Rebecca, as well as many close and dear friends, colleagues and clients. He will be forever missed and cherished by all who knew him.Services were held on October 10 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Miami. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Fairchild Tropical Garden.
Mizeida Fernandez Mizeida "Miki" Fernandez of Coral Gables passed away peacefully on October 12. She was 78. Miki enjoyed a full life surrounded by family and friends who loved her. She enjoyed traveling, and always had a special place in her heart for France and New York. She enjoyed the comfort of her home and sitting in her garden. She especially loved the autumn leaves. But what Miki was most passionate about was giving to those less fortunate. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Aida Guerrero and Sylvie Jordan; her beloved grandsons, Oliver R. H. Jordan and Steve Gonzalez, and his wife, Stephanie; her great granddaughter, Valentina and was awaiting the birth of her great grandson, Giovanni.

Marcel Robert Escoffier Marcel Robert Escoffier, of Coral Gables passed away unexpectedly on September 15. Marty was born in New Jersey in 1949 to Marion and Martin Escoffier. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Denver and his graduate degrees from Florida International University. After more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry ranging from chef to hotel manager to consultant in Colorado, Hawaii, California, and Florida, Marty began teaching full-time in the areas of accounting, management, food service management, and food and beverage operations control at Florida International University's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management where he was an associate professor. He was active in university committees, served as chairman of the faculty senate for 2003-2004, and was the editor of the FIU Hospitality Review for 2004-2007. Having published numerous journal articles and six books including coauthoring the best selling text, "Management by Menu", he was recognized as an authority in the field. Marty was also involved in several professional associations ranging from the American Taxation Association to several hospitality associations and was past president of the Florida- Caribbean Chapter of CHRIE (the association of hospitality and tourism school professors). Marcel was the grand-nephew of the great chef George August Escoffier and the grandson of both a French chef and, on his mother's side, a great saloon keeper and German chef. His hobbies included the study of comparative cuisine and food history. He enjoyed cooking romantic dinners for his wife, Shirley (an associate professor of accounting at the University of Miami), and traveling with her, particularly in France. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a true friend who will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but by many friends, colleagues, and students whose lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, his mother Marion, and his brothers- in-law Wayne Dennis and Richard Dennis. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 17 at 5:30 pm at Stanfill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions will be gratefully accepted to the "FIU Foundation, Inc." Ann Tanner (Jacobson) Ann Tanner (Jacobson), passed away peacefully on September 13 in Santa Monica, Calif.
