Rotary Club secures new home

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables was just one more community casualty when the Country Club ofCoral Gables was closed last May. Coral Gables Rotary has been meeting at the Country Club weekly since the club was first chartered in March, 1946. Only twice before in 62 years was this 155 member club required to find another venue for their weekly meetings. The first was after the fire in 1986. The second was during the renovations made by Granada LLC in 2002, when the Country Club closed so abruptly and without prior notice, the Westin Colonnade offered Rotary meeting space in the Rotunda, at least until June 30. However, as the date approached, it became clear that the reopening of the Country Club was not going to happen in time for start of the new Rotary year on July 1st.

2008-2009 president Abraham Horowitz negotiated with the Westin to secure a suitable location for Rotary to meet through June 30, 2009. “We were blessed that a new member of our Club, Janette Diaz, is the Catering Manager at the Westin. She helped us to make the transition to our new home as painless as possible,” said Horowitz.

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables is one of 32,000 Rotary clubs with 1.2 million members in over 200 countries. Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in their local communities and around the world. The Rotary motto is “Service Above Self.”

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables meets every Thursday at 12:15 p.m. at the Westin Colonnade Hotel. Interested in learning more about the organization? Call Terry Long at 305-441-8063 for more information.
