"26 Miles": New Theatre's coming-of-age tale

New Theatre presents the National New Play Network Rolling the World Premiere of "26 Miles" (November 20 – December 20, 2009) by Tony Award Winner Quiara Alegría Hudes. In this coming of age tale, a Cuban mother loses custody of her Jewish daughter and after eight years she is given a second chance. At 4:30 in the morning she kidnaps the sick teenage girl and the two drive west in search of a remedy and their divergent American dreams.

This production marks Quiara Alegría Hudes’ second play produced at New Theatre after the critically acclaimed "Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue" in 2006 and she wrote the book for the musical "In the Heights," both finalists for the Pulitzer  Prize in Drama. In the Heights, which continues its run on Broadway, has just  launched a national tour, and is the recipient of the 2008 Tony Award for Best  Musical. Other plays include 26 Miles (Alliance Theatre) and book and lyrics for Barrio Grrrl! (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). She is a resident  writer for New Dramatists, is the Aetna New Voices Fellow at Hartford Stage,  Joyce Fellow at Hudes is currently writing a new play, Water By the Spoonful,  and the screenplay of In the Heights for Universal Pictures. She lives in New  York with her husband and daughter.

"26 Miles" is directed by Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez, with a cast that includes New Theatre veterans Evelyn Perez, Jackie Rivera and Christopher
Vicchiollo. Derek Warriner, who will be making his New Theatre debut, joins the stellar cast.
